Autonomous Driving in Australia: Mercedes-Benz Intelligent World Drive (Part 3)

Five continents in five months. Mercedes-Benz is testing autonomous driving
in Australia with the driving assistance functions of the new S-Class. The
S-Class will collect data in Europe, China, Australia, Africa and the United
States to improve driver assistant system technology and adjust it to the

road.

00:51 Wildlife is a big topic here in Australia
00:53 when it comes to traffic.
00:55 From small to big it walks, crawls, hops, behaves differently.
00:59 It's really hard to predict what wildlife will do next.
01:03 So we try to recognize wildlife better
01:06 in order to develop strategies how to properly react to those.
01:10 That's a big safety concern obviously
01:12 and Australia is a perfect proving ground for that.
01:25 In Australia we have very clear signage, we have typically good markings.
01:30 Especially in intersections we have lanes.
01:32 In China, especially in Shanghai,
01:34 we saw big intersections with no lane markings whatsoever.
01:37 You just have to follow other traffic
01:39 or just guess where to go.
01:40 And of course, a very obvious thing:
01:41 this is our first country in the Intelligent World Drive
01:44 where we are driving on the other side of the road -
01:46 with a left hand driven car, as a test car from Germany -
01:49 on the left side of the road.
01:51 That's a challenge for us as well.
01:52 And we don't have that many confusing signs
01:56 where you don't really know what is meant
01:59 and for what times it applies.
02:00 We have some specific signs -
02:01 they're quite usual but we are happy to see them.
02:04 We expect to see, and we already saw
02:07 some signs that we didn't think about.
02:19 We started to make our DISTRONIC more intelligent with map data.
02:24 The 2018 S-Class can now automatically break in front of curves, bends
02:28 and in front of roundabouts.
02:30 This is also a challenge regarding autonomous driving
02:34 in the future; map data will be the key factor to face that challenge.
02:39 Today we use the map data in North America, Europe and China and we also
02:45 want to roll that out here in Australia.
02:49 Luckily we are here with the Intelligent World Drive and maybe we can go
for that.
03:06 Especially in Melbourne, we gained valuable insights in a variety of
driving situations.
03:09 One of them is called a hook turn.
03:11 It's when you turn to the right and cross a tram railway.
03:16 Then you have to do that from the very left lane so you have to drive into
the
03:19 intersection wait for the red light and then when the intersection is
clear turn
03:23 right across all the other lanes so that's very specific and we only have
03:27 that and see that in Melbourne worldwide.
03:30 We have the digital light in there that can not only light up the street
03:33 it can also project things onto the street.
03:36 One use case we're thinking about is warning the driver of obstacles that
are
03:40 reaching into the road that the driver might not be able to see very well.
03:43 So if the car detects that it could warn the driver by projecting
something onto the
03:47 road that he is really aware of that obstacle and can drive around it.
03:56 I actually went to university here in Sydney and I never thought I would
03:59 come back with such a cool project.
04:02 Professionally I'm extremely blown away how well the map based speed
adaptation works
04:06 and now we are beyond excited to see what South Africa has to bring.
